Getting website traffic to one’s website isn’t always easy. Digital marketers use different techniques to entice customers to engage with their contents. Such techniques include (but are not limited to), inbound marketing, content marketing, PPC (Pay-Per-Click), technical SEO and social media. In this article, we briefly describe each of these techniques, and explain how you can leverage them to get traffic to your new website
I remember as a teenager I used to LOVE the first day of school. While I was an average (At best) student, I looked forward to the first day. While you may think it’s because I was excited to learn- it wasn’t. I liked the first day because that was when you put on your best outfit and made an impression on your classmates.
Why the first day of school? Well, first, you’re guaranteed that all kids will be in attendance. As a result, you maximize the potential views of your outfit by rocking it on the first day. Second, there may be a chance to get new eyes on you: the eyes of people who’ve never seen you before. They could be new to the area, freshmen, or transfers you’ve never met them before. It is your chance to make a great first impression.
Your website is your outfit on the first day of school.
What good is an amazing outfit if half the school is absent?
What good is an amazing website if no one ever sees it?
Creating an attractive, effective website is an absolute must for businesses in 2017. But that is only the beginning. Without traffic, your website can’t do what it’s meant to, whether that’s brand awareness, lead generation, sales, etc.
Getting traffic isn’t easy. There are almost 1.2 Billion websites on the World Wide Web today, and the number is steady growing. Your site needs to be put in the best position to attract visitors from your target audience- visitors who will take the desired action you want them to.
So how do you do that? I’m going to show you. Keep in mind, whether you just had your website created, or you have had it for awhile and just need to boost traffic, I have the remedy for you.
Here are five tips (and some bonus points) to fast-track your site to greater traffic, more leads, and more authority. LET US BEGIN!
Inbound marketing is an approach focused on attracting customers through content and interactions that are relevant and helpful — not interruptive. I’ll talk more about content below, but the number one way to get traffic to your site is to focus on inbound marketing.
At its core, inbound marketing is just showing people content that is useful to them. The goal: Get them to visit your site and take a desired action.
As mentioned earlier, some site owners want users to buy a book for example. Others may want users to subscribe to a newsletter. Finally, some may simply want users to share your articles or engage with some content. The list of macro-conversions goes on and on.
Inbound marketing is a great way to show the visitor something they want to see, in order to push them closer toward taking whatever action you desire.
Mini (Website) Case Study
Say you sell golf gloves on your site. You could write an article reviewing all the best golf gloves of 2017. You can then use inbound marketing strategies (social media, pay-per-click, etc.) to promote that article by targeting golf fanatics (such as myself). Once I read your article, I may poke around your site to see what else you have to offer. Once I determine you know your stuff when it comes to golf, I visit your site regularly to get my fix. The longer I stay a loyal visitor, the higher chance I have of becoming a paying customer.
Inbound marketing is all about finding your target audience where they are, then bringing them to your site to do what you want them to do. This is the most effective way to drive website traffic and build your online presence.
As you probably already know, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Why is SEO important? Because there are over 3.5 Billion searches per day on Google alone! If someone is searching for your product/service, don’t you want to capture some of that potential traffic?
SEO is not easy- it’s a time-consuming art that requires testing and continuous monitoring in order to be successful. After all, there are only 10 positions on the first page of Google. If you’re not on the first page of Google, you might as well not exist- page one of Google gets 95% of search engine traffic.
SEO includes things such as:
- choosing the right keywords
- optimizing meta-descriptions
- utilizing alt text for images
- creating internal links to new content
There are also a ton of other things that site owners can do to rank well with search engines. Either way, make sure it’s a part of your brand’s strategy, as search engines alone can bring you the necessary amount of traffic needed in order to reach your goals.
Social Media Promotion:
As stated earlier, it’s not enough just to have great content. Or a great website. Or a cool outfit in high school. People need to SEE it! The best way to amplify the reach of your content is through social media.
I’ll spare you the lecture about the importance of social media, and I’ll even spare you a lesson on how to use social effectively. What I will say here is, social media promotion is a fantastic way to get the traffic you’re looking for. Chances are, the audience you are looking for is on social media- I can all but guarantee you they’re on Facebook and Twitter, and chances are good that they’re on Linkedin and Instagram, too. The important thing to remember with social media is that there are so many people out there doing what you’re doing: creating content in hopes of driving traffic to their site.
You need to be different, and how you do this is by your brand voice. Your brand’s story is unique to your brand only. Even if there are a million competitors in your industry, your brand’s story belongs to your brand only. Use it to create content. Explain to your audience why you are different, and entice them to learn more about why you are different.
Social media is an awesome place not only to promote your content, but to establish yourself as an authority in your industry. Building trust and credibility with your social media followers is a great way to drive website traffic and increase brand awareness.
The Holy Grail of lead generation and website traffic is CONTENT. Content is important because the internet has changed the way people do business. Consumers now have control of the buying process. Today customers can skip ads, decide which ads they want to see, and opt-out of communications. They are the true bosses when it comes to commerce. Brands have to cater to customers more than ever before.
This is where content comes to the rescue.
The goal in content marketing is to create content that helps/entertains/teaches your audience. Doing this consistently can help you build credibility with your audience. Moreover, your audience will begin to view you as an authority in your industry. It can result in regular web visits and/or followership on social media. If you play your cards right it can even increase sales.
The key to great content marketing is differentiating yourself from your competitors. Over 300 hours of Youtube video is uploaded every minute. Over 4 million posts are liked on Facebook, and over 2 million photos are liked on Instagram. That’s over the course of 60 seconds. That just tells you that everyone is creating and sharing content these days. To be heard through the noise, take your content marketing efforts seriously.
Last (but not least), Pay-per-click ads should be an integral part of getting your website off the ground in its initial growth phase. While I’d love to tell you that it’s fast and effective to get website traffic while not spending money, that’s simply not true. BUT the good news is this: pay-per-click is effective, and can offer major benefits in a rather short period of time.
Pay-per-click ads are exactly how they sound. You pay a host a certain amount of money each time your ad on their site is clicked. The most popular (and in our opinion, most effective) pay-per-click platforms are Facebook and Google.
The beauty of PPC is that it allows you to target specific audiences. Unlike old-school advertising such as newspaper, radio, and yes, even TV commercials, PPC allows you to control who sees your ad. It is a much more effective way to spend marketing dollars.
Once your site is complete, the first thing I recommend you do is to promote your site via PPC campaigns. Just to gain brand awareness (and not necessarily sell anything), you can typically spend $50 and reach tens of thousands of people. With an enticing headline and great content, you can start to see some traffic to your website.
PPC isn’t easy. It requires much testing, monitoring, and tweaking. However, the possible benefits are tremendous, especially starting out.
Tiny Tips- Little tidbits that go a long way:
- Guest Blog: Guest blogging occurs when someone writes a blog post for a website they do not own or regularly contribute to. Guest blogging is powerful because it can expose your content to a different audience. If you write great content and it catches a reader’s eye, they may follow you in order to see more of your content. This is a VERY effective strategy that can help expand your reach AND build credibility.
- Focus on Headlines: Which article would you rather read: “The Science of Six-Pack Abs” or “How to Get Six-Pack Abs in 30 Days – Without giving up your favorite foods!” The headlines are a MAJOR KEY to the success of what you publish. No matter how great your content is, it iss useless if the heading doesn’t entice people to click. Give a lot of thought to your headlines if you want more traffic to your website.
- Long-Tail Keywords: Long-tail keywords are typically three-to-four word search terms that are specific to what your website has to offer. Your SEO efforts should target long-tail keywords because these searches are typically used by people who know exactly what they are looking for. You’ll get less traffic to your site than broad-match keywords, but you’ll get higher conversions because your visitors come to your site knowing that you have what they are looking for.
- Build Your E-Mail List: Building your email list will turn first-time visitors into repeat visitors. This is an important step in building sustainable traffic to your site. It is also an important step towards building a loyal audience who looks forward to your content. If you are selling something on your site, your email list can also act as a high-converting lead source.
Utilize these tips and tricks, and your new site will be buzzing with more traffic than you know what to do with. What other things might I have missed?
